About Us

We are a government agency that invests in New Zealand feature films and short films.
We aim to contribute production financing to between eight and 12 great films each year.
We develop scripts and the careers of New Zealand filmmakers.
We promote New Zealand films here and overseas.
We market New Zealand's screen production industry overseas and attract international productions to New Zealand.
We administer the New Zealand Screen Production Grant and other grants and assist with co-productions.
Through our financing, and administration of incentive schemes, we have been involved in more than 300 feature films including Hunt for The Wilderpeople, Tickled, The Lord of the Rings, McLaren, The Hobbit, and Waru.

Our future
In the rapidly changing film environment we are continually looking towards the future. We have also launched a number of initiatives as a result. These include:

Supporting Māori films and filmmakers through scholarships and other initiatives
Connecting with the growing Asian film industry
Supporting diversity in the industry including a target of 50% of women filmmakers receiving professional development.

Our budget
Our budget is made up of Government funding, Lottery Grants Board funding, income from films, interest and reserves. Our total current budget is around $26 million. To find out more about how we use our budget, you can read our Annual Reports in the Resource Library.

Our Board
Our Board provides governance and policy direction. Funding decisions are made by an eight-member board representing the film industry and the wider business and arts community, and are based on recommendations from staff.
