The role

Surfing Australia is seeking a talented and experienced Director of Production & Distribution to join our team. In this full-time role based in our High Performance Centre in Casuarina, your primary purpose will be to tell the best stories of Surfing in Australia to inspire people, grow our audience and drive revenue.

Through a strategic approach and extensive relationships with internal stakeholders and external brands, streamers, and the media industry, you’ll successfully position Surfing Australia Studios as a key player and content creator.

 

#1 Creative concept development: Working with our Partnerships & Marketing team to create compelling content ideas for our own channels, current & prospective companies we work with at Surfing Australia as well as new show ideas for media companies.

  • Current & New Partners: on a weekly basis working with the Marketing & Partnership team to develop moving images content ideas for companies around our Surfing Australia initiatives, brand & sport

  • Media Companies: based on your understanding of the Australian marketplace, develop new content/show concepts for sale that Surfing Australia Studios could create

  • Surfing Australia Channels: working with the Marketing team to create new ideas & formats that help grow our own channels including SATV, Surfing Australia social media channels, mySURFtv, SurfingAustralia.com & any future channels for Surfing Australia

  • Events and Initiatives: Find new and innovative ways to cover SA events that are cost effective across the life of the event series & bring impactful content for our marketing channels.

 

#2 Production: Leading Surfing Australia Studios to create compelling moving images content including short form, TV series, documentaries, social, studio shows & live streaming surf events. Manage the production pipeline of work to be done including:

  • Marketing & Partnership content: Help produce content in line with Surfing Australia marketing plans & each partner marketing plans which each require premium content to be made as part of their agreement. Deliver all on time & on brief.

  • Surfing Australia TV a monthly 22-minute show for Channel 9

  • Rivals – a made for TV & socials surf event. 10 x 22-minute episodes for Channel 9 and for bite-size distribution on our owned marketing channels (Season 4)

  • The Hold Down – a panel countdown show on the top 5 moments in surfing. On Channel 9 & owned marketing channels

  • Event Content for distribution & promotion of our owned marketing channels

  • Inter-departmental content requirements for internal use and project and initiatives marketing strategies

  • Book video and stills photography at all events & projects utilising in-house or contract staff based on event and partner needs

  • Live Streaming / Broadcast:

  • ABB National final – live broadcast for Fox Sports (use & manage an external production company)

  • 1 to 8 x ABB regional events live streaming for Kayo

  • Australian Junior Surfing Championships events live streaming for Kayo

  • mySURFtv live – a live swell event for surf media including mySURFtv live & viral social media content for owned marketing channels

  • Co-ordinate the AV production of the Australian Surfing Awards content including motion graphics and video required for live show execution

  • Create content based on marketing briefs for Surfing Australia social channels – Surfing Australia, Irukandjis, mySURFtv, NRMA Insurance SurfGroms & Hyundai HPC

  • Manage the SA production cameras & production equipment

  • Maximise High Performance Program content through collaborative planning with Head of Podium, Pathway and marketing team to create new assets & impactful content to elevate athletes, the High Performance Program and our owned channels

  • Management of the production personnel & teams for major events and initiatives.

  • Responsible for the Surfing Australia content workflow, storage & library management system in Iconik. This includes maintaining solutions for visibility of stills and moving image assets to stakeholders across the business.

  • Educate and enforce Surfing Australia content and media policies across the business & production staff

  • Weekly news surf show – a week that was that is funny, interesting, best waves, newsworthy.

  • Australia – A surf film

  • Create daily premium content across Surfing Australia’s owned channels, including TV shows, content series, social campaigns, podcasts, video podcasts, and more. These would become meaningful marketing assets that can be sold to third-party commercial brands.

 

#3 Distribution: Find & win new distribution platforms & partners for our long & short form content to live (Australia & globally)

  • Meet & get distribution with all Australian media companies including 7, 9, 10, Fox, SBS, ABC, Stan, Optus, Telstra, Netflix, Prime etc & others for potential partnerships

  • Win Tourism boards for Surfing Australia Studios work – local councils e.g Gold Coast, State e.g. TEQ, Australia, Fiji, Indonesia, NZ, other

  • Manage the The Surf Channel content partnership

  • Develop & pitch potential paper concepts including: Transformation, Rich, Mentors Cup, Thrive, Journeymen, Through the lens, Game Changers, Contrast, Simply Snapper, Seven Bigs Days, The Fish, Locals only, On the couch with Ronnie & Vaughn, Greatest comeback, Women, Big Wave Dave, How I built that, Really, Surfing Australia Hall of famers – the legends of surfing (studio Show). (Waiting on final partners)

  

What we're looking for

  • Extensive experience in video production, including directing, editing, camera operations and post-production

  • Excellent prioritisation, organisation and project management skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment

  • Strong knowledge of the Australian media landscape

  • Produced great quality & high rating content for Australian TV

  • Produced moving images series

  • Excellent network & experience selling/distributing content

  • Highly creative able to develop easily new concepts for brands & media networks

  • Deep rolodex & strong relationships with media buyers/networks

  • Understanding of post-production workflow including file types and delivery formats

  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills and exemplary customer service skills

  • Able to work in a team environment and independently

  • Passion for the surfing and action sports industry, and a deep understanding of the target audience
